Written by woodworker on August 20th, 2009
Once you have chosen to use hardwood floors for your home, you are certainly making a decision that will make your home even more beautiful and exude a warm atmosphere for many years to come. But of course, this will happen if you will take good care of your hardwood floor properly.
You must bear in mind that although your wooden floors may have been treated for protection, it is still a wood and so, they would act accordingly. In other words, when water is spilled on it, the wood will eventually swell a bit. Likewise, when the wood is scratched, it could leave a mark that could not be repaired.
If you want your floors to look good for a very long time, follow these simple tips on how to maintain your hardwood floor:
Watch out for moisture
Never allow water to stay long on your hardwood floor. You should know that if water stays, even a drop, moisture can build up and they will permeate the fissures between the boards, this will lead to the swelling of the wood planks. This can also bring about major damage on your flooring, and so when you see water on the boards, wipe the fluid away at once.
For cleaning your woods, the best way is to mop them with damp cloth in order to take away dusts and smudges. You can also use some sort of wood cleaner and special polish to rub it clean and make your floors shiny.
Protection from dents and scratches
Sometimes you may find it hard to avoid the dents or scratch marks on your hardwood floor as some unavoidable circumstances, which are beyond your control can happen. For instance, you may have a visitor who is wearing stiletto high heeled shoes, that shoes can leave some undesirable dents on the floor. Similarly, some furniture legs can scratch the wooden floors when they are being moved.
In these cases, you can use carpets or large rugs to cover spaces under your furniture and where your visitors might walk into. Lastly, when you think that there are already too many flaws on your hardwood floor, it would be best to just have it refinished.
