How do you get dried glue off of woodworking clamps?

I have several Bessey type woodworking clamps (not the K body) and they have a considerable build up of regular woodworking glue that I would like to get cleaned up. Is there a way to do this by soaking the clamps in something that won’t hurt the clamp?

putty knife scrape off then sand
Create a video blog…instantly.
If it is woodglue then I would suggest using some denatured alcohol on a rag and rubbing it on the clamps. If that does not work try the next thing stronger, lacquer thinner. Next try mineral spirits. Finally the strongest would be acetone. I caution you with the use of acetone, wear latex gloves and have more close at hand. Acetone will absorb into latex and come in contact with your skin which will also absorb it. This stuff is not fun to play with, funny that it is the main ingredient in nail polish remover. If none of those work there is one more product made for the marine industry called Release, it is made by a company called Boat Life. I have never used it, but it is said to remove cured 5200, which is like the concrete of glues. I gave many different items to try based on my experiece and what might be available to you in your area. After you have removed it I would suggest rinsing the clamps with a good amount of water before using them again.

If it is Elmers type wood glue, it will actually dissolve in water if you soak the portion with the glue on it. Just be sure to dry and oil them.

goof off works wonders. Goof off also has a water based product that removes glue as well.

I am not sure if this will work but it’s worth a shot…
Put the clamps in the freezer overnight and then try removing the glue with a spatula…
