Installing a Circular Staircase
Written by woodworker on December 25th, 2009
Conventional staircases take up a large area on two levels, circular staircases can be an efficient alternative ,especially in areas where space is at a premium.Circular staircases are prefabricated and can simplify the project and create a more efficient stairway between two levels.
Materials on this type of project include a factory-made circular staircase unit and support materials to maintain floor and ceiling strength. The unit is spiral in design, consisting of a heavy aluminium or steel center support pole and pie shaped treads that fan outward from it.
The staircases come in kits with instructions and guidlines for installation.Once the ceiling opening has been cut to the dimensions specified by the manufacturer,it must be framed.
The staircase is then assembled in place by sections, and plumbed, leveled, and fastened in its location. After you have it in place, the joists will need to be boxed and framed. The lumber used for the trimmer joists and headers should match existing joists.
The staircase will be adding more weight on that specific area,so additional support should be provided beneath the floor on which the staircase stands.Usually, doubling the existing joists in that area directly under the unit and adding supplementary blocking is enough.
Materials used to finish the ceiling cut-out should match trim in the room below. The rough box should be faced with pine boards and trimmed.
This is not really a project for beginners, they can assemble the staircase and do the trim work, but hire a pro to cut the opening and reinforce the joists.Intermediates who have experience in framing should be able to accomplish most of the work on this project, although intermediates without experience in structural carpentry, should investigate and get guidance if needed.
If space is an issue and you are in need of a staircase to the attic or next floor in your home,a circular staircase may be the answer. The installation requires only a 4′ to 5′ area in diameter, and as long as you take care in cutting and frameing, the result should be a sturdy and functional stairway.
