you can get a job in lots of places. and yes you can start your own bussiness.
cabinet making is fine woodworking. you can work in a furniture factory or you can work in a kitchen making place. you can repair or reproduce anitque furniture. there are tons of jobs you can do with that skill . as for building or rough carpentry you would work in building homes or restoring homes . if your trained as a cabinet maker you can do both no problem . the rough carpenter is not as likely to be able to do the fine work .
i would say do it. try repairing old broken antiques refinish them and repair them on your own buy them so you can take as much time as you want . study the joints and use hand tools to make copies of them .
you dont need lots of expensive tools to do this. there is one guy on tv that makes stuff using no power tools and he makes lots of tools as well . he is great to watch and learn from . i dont remember his name but he is about 40 and wears coveralls all the time and most often a hat.

the most profittable is as a cabinetmaker, but that takes an apprenticeship. Other avenues are set/prop builders for plays, tv and movies. Furniture and outdoor shed construction isn’t as profittable but you can get steady business. The best education is from a practicing woodworker and not from an academic institution, because they have put all the aspect of the trade to use and are up to date on the past and current tools of the trade and know which techniques work for different and unforseen situations.

You need to contact the local union and talk to them about getting additional education in the field. They will have many programs in house and also usually in an adult schooling situation for those interested. It really depends on what your speciality is.If you feel adventurous, you can venture out on your own business or do a contractual job base on per project (they usually got good pay n you do on your own sweet time) or become a worker.

But if you wish to set up your own company, try taking up other courses other than woodworking only such as building and construction or interior designing so you got more cover when you are doing project proposals.
